Professional Phase Admission

Admission to the professional phase (years 2 through 5) of the B.Arch program at the School of Architecture is a competitive process.  On average, the School admits 200 students to the pre-architecture year.  Of that number, anywhere from 90 to 120 students typically apply to the professional phase and of these, 60 students are selected to continue in the B.Arch program.  This competitive cut occurs once each year:  applications are submitted at the end of the spring semester and students are notified of their status in the early summer.  The professional phase begins the following fall.

The application process is administered by the School of Architecture in accordance with the policies and procedures outlined below.  A cumulative GPA of 3.0 for courses taken during  the pre-architecture year is the minimum required for admission, although meeting this minimum does not assure a student that she or he will be accepted into the professional phase of the program.  Students who do not meet the minimum standard will not be considered for admission; however, hardship petitions may be submitted and will be considered.  Download a copy of the Hardship Rule Petition (pdf).

Additional application requirements:
  • submission of a professional phase application
  • mounting an exhibit of creative work
  • writing a critical essay
  • completion of all required pre-architecture year coursework by the end of the first summer session
Philosophy

The underlying aim of the professional phase admissions process is selecting those students with the highest potential for success in the program.  Final selection is based on academic performance and demonstration of creative work.  The admissions formula slightly favors Arizona residents.

Procedures

Selection for the professional phase is made as soon as grades for the spring and first summer terms become available and the verification process can be completed.  Students are normally informed of their status by July 20th.  It is the responsibility of each student to furnish the Admissions Committee with required documentation by the deadlines specified, and to verify that it has been received.  Applications submitted late or without required supporting documentation will not be considered.

Students who complete their course requirements during the first summer session at a community college should submit a Preliminary Grade Report from their course instructor(s) to the School of Architecture as soon as the courses have been completed.   Download a copy of the Preliminary Grade Report (pdf).

A "Notification of Acceptance" form is enclosed with the letter of admission to the professional phase.  Students are required to return the form to the School of Architecture in order to reserve their place in the program.  Failure to return this form within the prescribed time period will result in the applicant's place being assigned to someone else.
