The Balance Problem Set

Problem 7 Tutorial: Symmetry in Plan

Question: Which of the following floor plans is the best example of symmetry?

San Vitale,
Ravenna, Italy
(540)

Palladio,
Il Redentore,
(1577)

Tutorial:

Symmetry
Symmetry is the correspondence in size, shape and position of parts on opposite sides of a dividing line or axis. If a line is drawn on the axis, either in plan or in elevation, one half of the building could be reproduced as a mirror image of the other half. Use of symmetry is one method for creating balance.
The plan of the Parthenon is a good example of symmetry because it demonstrates correspondence in size, shape and position of parts on opposite sides of a dividing line or axis.

Ictinus/Callicrates,
Parthenon,
(447-432 BC)

Biaxial symmetry
Biaxial symmetry is the condition in which the plan is symmetrical on two perpendicular axes.
Palladio
Villa Rotonda
Vicenza, Italy
(1569)
